Team building with actors: what it is, how it works, and why it truly engages participants
Discover CHRONES. SRL’s team building with actors: an experiential training format based on SEPHIROT®, where participants step into a story, collaborate, make decisions, and actively develop soft skills.
A team building experience with actors is a training activity in which participants do more than simply listen to content or complete abstract exercises. Instead, they step into a narrative scenario brought to life by professional performers.
The actors are an integral part of the learning system: they portray characters, create conflict, provide information, trigger decisions, observe group dynamics, and help participants experience a credible, engaging, and emotionally impactful situation.
In the format developed by CHRONES. SRL through SEPHIROT®, team building with actors becomes a true form of interactive storytelling applied to corporate training.
Participants enter a story. They are given an objective. They encounter clues, characters, dilemmas, time constraints, incomplete information, and operational choices. They have to communicate, collaborate, make decisions, negotiate, and take responsibility for their actions.
Why team building with actors works
Many corporate training programs focus on collaboration, leadership, listening, communication, and decision-making. The problem is that these skills are often addressed theoretically, at a distance from real behavior. Team building with actors works because it moves people from a passive role into an active one.
They need to listen carefully because they need information. They have to communicate clearly because the group needs to coordinate. They need to make decisions because the story can only move forward when someone takes action. They must manage pressure, ambiguity, and limited time. They have to engage with different points of view. And they need to collaborate even when they do not have all the answers.
In this way, theatrical team building is not simply about “creating a fun group experience.” It brings observable behaviors to the surface. This is where its greatest value lies: within a well-designed narrative situation, workplace dynamics become visible.
Who takes the lead? Who listens? Who facilitates? Who gets left behind? Who makes connections? Who communicates effectively under pressure? Who can turn fragmented information into a shared decision?
The role of actors in experiential training
In CHRONES. SRL’s team building experiences, performers play a precise and multifaceted role.
They are actors, bringing the characters within the scenario to life.
They are narrative guides, helping participants navigate the story.
They are emotional activators, making the experience credible and memorable.
They are implicit facilitators, encouraging choices, questions, and discussion.
They are observers, reading the dynamics that emerge during the experience.
And they are training tools, capable of conveying concepts such as non-verbal communication, negotiation, listening, conflict management, empathy, and uncertainty management through simulation.
SEPHIROT®: the system behind the format
CHRONES. SRL’s team building with actors is based on SEPHIROT®, an interactive storytelling system created by Alessandro Anglani, expert in interactive storytelling applied to the performing arts. SEPHIROT® makes it possible to transform any story into an interactive scenario in which participants become first-person protagonists.
Applied to corporate training, this means that an organizational topic can become a situation to experience firsthand. An internal communication issue can become a narrative mission. A leadership topic can become a decision made under pressure. A challenge involving different departments can become a collaboration scenario. An onboarding program can become an experience of exploration and belonging. A company value can become a concrete decision within a story.
Participants learn because they act. They remember because they are involved. They reflect because they have experienced a situation that feels relevant to them.
What skills can team building with actors develop?
A team building experience with actors can be designed to activate different skills depending on the company’s objectives.
Some of the most common include:
- effective communication;
- active listening;
- collaboration;
- trust;
- leadership;
- emergent leadership;
- decision-making;
- problem-solving;
- conflict management;
- negotiation;
- public speaking;
- empathy;
- managing uncertainty;
- results orientation;
- ability to work under pressure;
- DEI;
- intergenerational collaboration;
- cross-departmental collaboration.
The strength of the method lies in the fact that these skills are not treated as keywords, but as behaviors.
Observable behavioral KPIs
One of the most interesting advantages of a well-designed experiential team building program is that it makes it possible to observe behaviors as they happen, rather than simply discussing them afterwards.
During a SEPHIROT® experience, participants are placed within a narrative scenario that requires collaboration, listening, decision-making, information management, and the ability to navigate situations involving pressure or ambiguity.
Within this context, dynamics emerge that often remain implicit or difficult to identify in everyday working life.
Aggregated behavioral observations have shown very high levels of activation.
All participants completed the experience, resulting in a 100% completion rate.
Observed engagement reached 93%, meaning that the vast majority of participants spoke up, developed hypotheses, asked questions, or actively contributed to the group’s work.
The results relating to collaboration were also particularly significant.
Effective collaboration emerged during at least one key stage of the experience in 100% of the teams observed.
88% of groups demonstrated adequate problem-solving skills, while 75% were able to maintain a results-oriented approach even when faced with pressure, ambiguity, or limited time.
Another relevant figure concerns decision-making: 93% of participants were involved in developing hypotheses, asking questions, or making operational choices based on the information gathered during the activity.
In addition, forms of spontaneous leadership, guidance, or natural coordination emerged in 100% of the teams.
What types of companies is it suitable for?
Team building with actors is suitable for organizations that want to work on collaboration, communication, and internal culture at a deeper level than a standard team building activity.
It is particularly useful for:
- teams within the same department that need to strengthen trust and coordination;
- groups involving different departments that need to get to know one another and communicate more effectively;
- intergenerational teams;
- onboarding programs for new hires;
- programs for graduates and young talent;
- employee branding initiatives;
- HR and Learning & Development programs;
- initiatives focused on leadership, soft skills, and cultural change;
- companies that want to observe real group dynamics within a safe environment.
The sectors that can particularly benefit from this approach include banking, insurance, manufacturing, factories, retail, and complex organizations where collaboration, communication, and shared decision-making have a direct impact on everyday work.
The difference between team building with actors and a corporate show
The difference is fundamental: participants are responsible for the action. They are not sitting in front of something that happens to someone else. They are inside a situation that requires their contribution. They have to understand, choose, speak, collaborate, take a position, develop hypotheses, assume roles, and reach a decision. This changes the level of engagement. When someone becomes part of the story, their attention increases. When their actions produce consequences, the experience becomes more memorable. When the group has to act together, relational dynamics emerge more clearly.
